Small Town Traditions
When you move to a new town you have the opportunity to embrace new traditions. Moving to Kingsville has provided us many opportunities to jump right in to the South Texas spirit. Kingsville is a lesser known town in the heart of the Wild Horse Desert. Known mostly for the history of the King Ranch, Kingsville has many small town deep rooted traditions. Last Christmas was our first introduction to “La Posada de Kingsville” and I am excited to tell you why we will return again and again!
The Celebration of Lights
The entire weekend is the Celebration of Lights, with live music and events at the Old Train Depot. They have local vendors, food trucks, a baking competition, wreath decorating competition and much more. It is ALWAYS the first weekend of December with out fail. And this year it is marking the 30th annual celebration.
On Saturday evening La Posada and the Parade of lights makes its way down Main Street. I am certain the entire town comes out to celebrate. And downtown Kingsville becomes the most quintessential Christmas scene you’ll ever see.
La Posada De Kingsville
The parade rolls forth at 7pm. But you will want to be in your spot by 6:30. If you get there early you will be able to see “La Posada”. Which is when Mary, Joseph, and the Nativity scene make their way silently down the parade route. There is something so magical about beginning the Christmas season with a silent reminder of the reason for the season. The tribute reminds everyone in attendance to take a minute and be quiet. To stop the hustle and bustle and hug your family tight. Everyone has different Christmas traditions, and yet for just a moment in the heart of Kingsville everyone is united and grateful for that first Christmas so long ago.
As the parade begins you will quickly see that every organization, denomination, club, and passion is represented in one huge celebration of light! And because it’s South Texas you probably won’t be “too” cold. Just enough to wear a jacket and get in the Christmas spirit!
Our family LOVES the Posada and we look forward to attending again this year and kicking off our Holiday Season with the history and traditions of Kingsville once again! If you join us this year Tag us and click here for some more information for the event!
