Earth Day: Actually Using Those Reusable Shopping Bags

By now, we have all heard there is too much plastic in our environment, especially in the form of plastic shopping bags.

You may have bought some reusable shopping bags, with the best intentions of reducing the use of plastic.

But in our hectic lives, running from place to place, trying to get in and out of a store or shop as quickly as possible, remembering to grab those reusables just…doesn’t…happen.

I got so aggravated with myself for not using the bags I have, I decided to form a routine around them. Maybe these steps will help you incorporate non-plastic bags into your life.

Have a stash of bags

I have about 30 reusable bags in all sizes and materials. Smaller ones for fruits and veggies, larger ones for heavy stuff like cans and all sizes in between for carrying all sorts of things. The more you have, the less likely you will run out and need to use a plastic one.

Keep them in your car

This is the number one thing I do. Not only keep them in the car, but place them where you can see them – next to the car seat, under your purse, etc. That way, you see them and actually take them with you.

Wash them right after use

If you use your reusable bags for carrying groceries, as soon as everything is unloaded and put away, throw the bags in the wash. Germs from raw meat and dirt from cans and bottles can cause your bags to get pretty nasty pretty quick.

Add the clean bags to your stash, place stash in car, wash stash after using – repeat until using those beautiful reusable becomes second nature.

Follow these three steps and help our planet. Happy Earth Day!
