I love this time of year in South Texas because in April a full week of Fiesta Celebrations starts in San Antonio. Although I don’t live in San Antonio, I love seeing all of the beautiful vibrant colors fiestas brings out. Right after Fiesta, is Cinco de Mayo, I know many love to celebrate this holiday with parties or decorating their homes with something festive.
Earlier this month, I had a Fiesta themed baby shower to celebrate the upcoming arrival of my daughter. The majority of the decorations were handmade. Some of my favorite decorations were these mini succulent terracotta pots. The best part about creating them was that I could use them year-round, if I liked, around my home.
Material needed:
- Mini terracotta pots– (found at the dollar tree pack of two 3.5 inch)
- Mini fake succulents or any festive flower
- Large rocks
- Styrofoam balls– (found 3 inch balls at Walmart)
- Mini rocks– (found at Walmart)
- Matte Acrylic Paint – (can be found at any craft store in any color desired)
- Foam brush
- Knife
First, paint your mini terracotta pots and let them dry for about 15 minutes.
The acrylic doesn’t take much time to dry and you want to get at least two coats on the pots. You don’t need to paint inside the pot or on the bottom, because they will not be shown.
While you are waiting for the pot to dry take the Styrofoam balls and cut them equally in half, using a knife or anything sharp enough to cut through the foam. Depending on how many you are making, the pots should be dry by now.
You will now want to empty the large rocks into the pot about 1/3 of the way. Then pat it down. Next, place the Styrofoam ball on top of the large rocks flat side down, with the rounded part facing up. Pat it down tight. Then, sprinkle the mini rocks all around the sides of the foam ball and covering the top part of the foam ball. Once it’s completely covered and patted down leveled with the rim of the pot. Stick in the succulent forcing the stem part into the foam ball, to secure the plant. Adjust any mini rocks to make sure everything is covered and add any mini rocks as needed.
Once the last step is completed you can continue to make more and more until you have as many pots needed to decorate your festive tables. The best part about this creation is that there is no water needed or up-keep to have it year-round. Yup, no need to thank me, but you’re welcome!
Have a Happy Cinco de Mayo friends!
