September 19 is “National Talk Like a Pirate Day,” to celebrate I wanted to give you and your kiddos a fun craft to do and some fun Pirate words they can learn.
This year National Talk Like a Pirate Day falls on a Saturday. The perfect day to let the kids dress up, do an easy Pirate craft together, and learn some Pirate words. I created this sheet that gives you the Pirate word and its English counterpart, to make this lesson a little more educational the English words are traceable.
This is a great way to turn a fun activity into an opportunity to practice sight words, letters, and spelling. You can download the FREE printable here!
Once you have learned your new Pirate words there is no better way to practice them by making these EASY Pirate puppets!
Supplies Needed:
- Paper Lunch Bags (or you could just use craft paper or a paper plate)
- Construction Paper
- Glue (or tape)
- Scissors
- Crayons, Markers, or Colored Pencils
How to Assemble your Pirate:
- Trace your child’s hand on the bag with their fingers pointed down to the opening.
2. Let them color the hand trace as the Pirate’s face. The thumb and palm are the hat, the middle of the palm is the face, and the four fingers are the beard.
3. Let them decorate the body
4. Cut strips of paper for the arms and legs. (You can even get fancy and make hands and feet…we did not LOL) Then you will accordion-fold these strips to make them bouncy. As you can see my son wanted his pirate to have a peg leg so one of his legs is brown and I drew what I thought was a pretty good peg leg on it before I folded it!
5. Glue the arms and legs onto the bag and you’re done!
And the best part is you might get a good 5 minutes of quiet while they focus on decorating their puppets! At least one can hope right!
Your kiddos now have fun Pirate puppets to play with!
