You might not think of the story of P.T. Barnum would be entertaining or appropriate for the family. However, if you or anyone in your tribe enjoy musicals, Zac Efron, or the circus, this movie will surely satisfy.

What you need to know:

The Greatest Showman is rated PG and stars Hugh Jackman as P.T. Barnum, the creator of the Barnum Circus. Some of the themes explored include perseverance (Barnum grew up poor), love of family and faithfulness to a spouse. Other themes that loom large in the film are bigotry and racism, as Barnum’s circus was founded with performers that were considered taboo at the time.

There is very little bad language, but there are some racial slurs voiced. Several scenes take place in a bar or involve drinking alcohol.

There is a scene with a burning building and fire that might upset younger kids.

What my family liked:

This movie is visually stunning, especially during the circus performances. The music is wonderful and catchy, with songs of love and empowerment. Plus, who knew Zac Efron was still such a performer! He’s come a long way since the High School Musical days!

Check out this video of the heart and soul song of the film, This is Me. My four year old has been singing it for days!

FYI – I used to manage a drive-in movie theater and I would often get asked if films we were screening were family friendly. I would direct people to the website Common Sense Media. The site reviews movies, books, apps and games for kids.

Common Sense is the leading independent nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids thrive in a world of media and technology. We empower parents, teachers, and policymakers by providing unbiased information, trusted advice, and innovative tools to help them harness the power of media and technology as a positive force in all kids’ lives.

Bottom line: My young son, husband and I all loved the movie. We have watched it at least three times now! I know my one and a half year old great niece loves it too!

(Side note: CCMB’s owner & boys (ages 6 & 12) loved the movie and sing songs from the soundtrack pretty much every single day!)

If you want another opinion on this film, I highly recommend Common Sense Media. Then you can decide what entertainment is best for your family.
