Shopping Guide: A List Of Non-Toy Gifts!

0

My pre-school-aged son has a lot of toys. Being the youngest grandchild on one side of the family and the only grandchild on the other side, he is well taken care of on holidays.

The thing is, most of the time, the toys are played with for a short bit and then put down. He gravitates to more of his non-toy items that inspire pretend play, imagination or are just plain useful.

Moms, do you really want another toy in your house? Another thing that makes too much noise? Or has too many pieces, that will eventually get lost or stepped on? For me, the answer is heck no.

That’s why I present to you, my list of favorite non-toy gifts, for kids of all ages. Keep this guide handy as you head out for Birthday or Holiday shopping!

Sleeping Bag Age level – 3 and up, tweens, teens

My little guy loves hiding in his bag, tucking his teddy bear in, wearing it like a cape and generally everything but sleeping in it. That’s ok with me. For older kids, a sleeping bag is perfect for slumber parties, camping trips and long bus rides.

Tent :: Age level – 3 and up, tweens, teens, adults

My son’s tent is a kid version, so it’s more like a little teepee. He LOVES to sit in there and read his books. We added some LED lights as an extra touch. For older kids, a first camp out could be in the backyard with a bigger tent. We also have a beach tent that the whole family utilizes to get out of the sun, take a nap, etc.

Flashlight :: Age level – 3 and up, teens, adults

My little guy has had a kids’ flashlight since he was just over two. I have found him crashed out for the night with his light on more than once. I really like this one from Melissa and Doug. It doesn’t make noise, has an easy on/off button and the light is not as bright as a regular flashlight to protect eyes.

For older kids, a heavier-duty flashlight makes a great dorm gift. It’s also great to keep in the car as a cell phone flashlight might not be enough.

Bean Bag :: Age level – 3 and up, tweens, teens, adults

My son like to chill (his words) in has bag while watching TV. Bags are great for any age really, for gaming, reading and chilling. There are many different sizes and prices. Look for one with a washable removable cover.

Placemats :: Age level – 3 to 7

My kid really likes his space and US map placemats. He learns a little something each time and it helps get him to the table on the days he doesn’t want to sit down. You can find a wide variety on Amazon. Bonus – it helps keep the table clean!

Map or Globe :: Age level – 3 and up, tweens, teens

A paper map can be used to mark locations where your child has traveled, while a globe can be used to inspire discussion with older kids about world events. My son is 4, so just likes to spin the globe right now 🙂

That’s it. I hope you can find something for your child in this list. What is your favorite non-toy gift?
