A Mom’s Job is Never Done

Memories of Mom- Mother's Day 2016- Corpus Christi Moms Blog

Moms don’t get a day off, and their job is never done. You know this, right? Moms do NOT count down the days until their retirement. Oh, yeah, that’s because moms NEVER retire.Mom

When I was younger, these thoughts never crossed my mind. I mean, moms have a job. They just do it. No questions asked, and no complaints from them. Now I am all “grown up” with children of my own, and I am still glad that my mother never “retired.” This letter goes out to a woman that will always hold the greatest title on earth, “Mom.”

Mama and Me at Bridal Shower

Dear Mom,

Thanks for never retiring. You had four children that you loved, cared for, and simply lived for everyday.  Some say you’re required to raise each child until they are at least 18 years of age. You gave us more. You have never stopped being our mother.

I wish that I could record my memories, save them on a disc, and share them with the world. You did amazing things as a mother. You moved mountains, without even trying. There is so much I want to tell you… so much that I want you to know. And, maybe you know all of this already. That’s okay. I am proud to write this letter without reserve. I hope you know that you are still one of the most important persons in my life. Even though I have a family (a husband and four kids, just like you), I still turn to you for… well, for just about everything.

You are my teacher in faith.

I am glad that I had someone to teach me about my faith, and to show me how He can guide us through any problem.  (Struggles come with motherhood, so this is essential in a mother’s life.) Thank you for planting this seed of faith! I also love that I can ask you to pray for me… and your prayers commence immediately.

You are my greatest cheerleader and my biggest fan.

I don’t remember every gift you bought me. I cannot recall each toy that filled my toy box. But, I do remember you always being there. As a stay-at-home mom, you were able to be the “room mom” for my class, and volunteer at school. You attended every assembly and school function. You were at all of our games, dance performances, and school presentations. You cheered us on, and your presence meant the world to all of us.

Your opinion still matters to me.

You are there for even the simplest of matters in my life. I still text you a picture of my outfit, and ask which shoes match best. (What? You have always been my adviser and stylist.) You will always be my #1 resource. Growing up, we couldn’t just google our problems and questions. No, Mom, you knew it all. You were the one with all of the answers. You still are. That is why I have to call you so often. Besides my husband, you are still the only person I can talk to on the phone for over an hour. You are one of the top reasons why I tell my hubby that we could never leave Corpus Christi. Yes, I still need you.

You remain my leading model and inspiration for motherhood.

I am who I am because of you.

Everyone says, “We become our mothers.” Is that such a bad thing? No, not for me.

I take it as the biggest compliment. I am a stay-at-home mom because I want my children’s lives to mirror my childhood with you. I can be a chef, a doctor, a comforter, a supporter, a teacher, and a mother of many more hats because you have taught me that this is how mothers truly work. When I was little, I would get hurt. The only thing that eased my fears and worries was to hear your voice, “You’ll be fine,” or simply, “It’s okay.” I owe my reading obsession and thirst for learning to you because you were my first teacher. You have always motivated me, and encouraged me to do my best. I hope I can be that same type of mother to my own children.

You became an awesome grandmother.

Great moms become awesome grandmothers for a reason. You are my first choice babysitter for my children. I know I can trust you because you took care of me all of my life. If one of my children gets sick, you will drop everything to make your homemade caldo (soup), and stop by for a visit. (By the way, your home-cooking still beats every restaurant.) You go to my children’s programs, recitals, and sports games. You love my children like they were your own. What a blessing it is to have you in our lives!

I love you, Mom. Thank you for being THAT mom. Thank you for raising your four children. Thank you for never retiring.

Love your daughter,

Janell

I want to wish my mother and all of the other mothers out there a very Happy Mother’s Day! You may never know the impact you have on your children. But, always remember that you are the greatest model in your children’s lives.
