iPads. Tablets. Macbooks. Laptops. Nabi, etc.

Technology definitely plays an important role in our day to day activities, especially since we are a homeschooling family.  Though we limit screen time for our 8-year-old twins and 4-year-old son, we appreciate the ability to source tools for learning from the internet.

To ensure our curriculum doesn’t become too monotonous, I regularly keep my eyes open for apps and programs that are fun and new.  Even if you don’t home school, the right apps can be used to practice skills and brush up on subjects that your children may be focusing on in school.

Below, I’ve compiled a list {in no particular order} of our family’s current favorite learning apps!

Teach Your Monster to Read (Apple Store, Google Store and online version available) –This is a new one for us, but all 3 of my kiddos really like it thus far. After designing and customizing their own monster, they can choose from three levels – beginning reader, intermediate or advanced. You can track your child’s individual progress by creating a login for each one. Really fun, entertaining and productive! A lot of the games involve troubleshooting which is an exercise for the brain!

Reading Eggs/Mathseeds (Online/App Store) – This is a fantastic one. After the trial, there is a monthly fee but its a definitely worth it, in my opinion. The program covers reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, grammar and even focuses on numbers in the Mathseeds section! The ability to track progress is a huge perk so that you can adjust levels as your child evolves.

Geocaching (Apple Store/Google Store/Online) – Our family spends tons of time outside daily Typically, the rule is to leave all electronics indoors. But this is a cool way that technology and nature collide. Geocaching is a modern-day treasure hunt that allows you to hike, explore the outdoors with your kids, show them how to use a compass, GPS and more. While geocaching is usually a hunt for a specific treasure or “cache” that other people have hidden and logged on the map, you can also use the experience to connect with nature! Check it out!

Look & Find: History (Apple Store/Google Store) –  This one is really fun and educational. Your child can choose from 24 maps of 6 different historical themes from around the world. From Prehistory to the 20th Century, travel to America, Africa, Europe, and Asia to discover new civilizations. This app helps build vocabulary in 11 different languages! It is bright, colorful, and entertaining.

Starfall (Apple Store/Google Store/Online) – I’m definitely a huge fan of this all-encompassing program. It includes phonics, math, reading, writing, sing-along videos, an online library full of books, a calendar, and so much more. The site is very interactive, colorful and full of fun while learning.

Technology is just a tool. In terms of getting the kids working together and motivating them, the teacher is the most important.”
