With the new shelter in place order my kids have a hard time knowing what day of the week it is. And let’s be honest- I kind of do too. Even though we follow a pretty loose schedule during the school year I noticed that my children were feeling really unsettled not knowing what to expect, and what to look forward to. Honestly, an emotion that I can 100% relate to.
We used to know that Wednesday meant ballet, and Sunday meant church, and Tuesdays were storytime at the library..and now that those things aren’t happening we couldn’t even recognize our own rhythm.
I didn’t want to create such a rigid schedule that it didn’t allow for freedom, or bad days and big emotions. Because all those things are happening on the daily. But we also all needed something to look forward to and a way for my kiddos to recognize their days of the week. And it actually has been fun for me. I enjoy thinking about and looking forward to our next day’s adventures.
So this is what our daily “fun” time looks like:
Monday’s: Play-doh time
Tuesday: Cooking Class
Wednesday: Arts and Crafts
Thursday: Science Experiment Day
Friday: Long Bike Ride Day
Benefits to this rhythm include the fact that I don’t have to plan an art project every day, and I can have a few days to plan a science experiment that will impress. These also often taken less than an hour and I do them with my kiddos which is fun for all of us. We do this “fun time” after school work is done so it gives us all something to look forward to.
