10 of our Favorite Christmas Books

(For Children)

Last year I wrote about our Christmas Book tradition, which you can read here. As the Christmas season is upon us I am getting excited to get our books out and start the tradition all over again! I love Christmas books so much, and I thought it would be fun to share some of our favorites with you!

(To make your Christmas shopping easier I’ve added Amazon links to each of these favorites).

  1. Room for Little One

This is the sweetest story about the animals in the Stable on the night of that first Christmas many years ago. And just like the stable had room for all these animals, the stable had room for the little babe born in Bethlehem. If you’re looking for a more “nativity” centered Christmas story I would definitely add this one to your collection.

2. Red and Lulu

Red and Lulu are best friends and they love their home in the big green evergreen tree. One day they are separated and their tree is gone. Red never gives up trying to find Lulu and in one magical moment they are reunited just in time for Christmas. I love cardinals at Christmas time, so this was a perfect book for us.

3. The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey

This is a classic story of the miracle of love at Christmas. A young widow and her son ask the town’s grumpiest carpenter to recreate their lost Nativity set. Soon they all become friends, and  the hard exterior of Mr. Toomey begins to crack. A beautiful story of friendship and love it’s a Christmas favorite at our house. (It is a longer one)

4. I Believe in Santa Claus

I adore this book. We read it every year on Christmas Eve to remind us of the meanings of the symbols of Christmas.  Every year I struggle to keep the magic of Santa and the magic of the true meaning of Christmas alive together and this Christmas book is my favorite one for just that.

5. The Polar Express

I love the movie that was created after this book, but the book will always hold a special place in my heart. I always get swept up in the illustrations and when I finish the last page I always swear I can hear the bell, because I will always truly believe.

6. A Christmas Guest

This is a story that I carried over from my childhood. In fact my mom gifted me her personal copy because I loved it so much. On a cold Christmas Eve many years ago a young boy opened the door to find a little old woman on his front porch. After a special cup of hot coco and warm conversation a miracle happens. This Christmas book always warms my heart.

7. Walk the World At Christmas Time

This book was new to us last year and we LOVE it! The illustrations are outstanding. It is a flip the flap book, that walks you through traditions all around the world. We have loved learning about them and want to try some of them on our own! If you have little non-fiction lovers they will love this one!

8. Little Blue Truck’s Christmas

If you have a toddler, chances are you have heard of Little Blue. And we love His Christmas book just as much as all the others. At our house this is honestly the one that is the most read right now! And the twinkle lights at the end are a special bonus!

9. The Spirit of Christmas

My Mom gifted this sweet book to me the first Christmas I was away from home. Nancy Tillman always speaks to the heart, and her Christmas book is no different. A beautiful message about how our hearts will always want those we love most around our Christmas tree.

10. We Believe in Christmas

This gorgeous story, written in poem format connects all the elements of the beautiful season together. It alternates between Santa, symbols, and the Nativity scene to present a beautiful image of all the magic of Christmas.
