Lessons on Becoming a Blended Family

0

In October of 2019, my concept of what I knew of my family changed for the better.  I got married and it brought on a lot of changes.

My husband had three adult children and I had one adult daughter.  After all the dust settled from planning a wedding I settled into my new life and realized it was up to me to learn more about my new kids.

The first lesson I learned was to be patient and to allow each one of them to used to the idea their Dad had remarried. I took a genuine interest in each one and learned more about who they were and their individual personalities.

I had to be patient and learn more about each of them.

The second lesson I learned was to be myself.  My husband advised me to get to know them each on their timing and be myself.  He told me over time they would get to know me as well and they would see why he had chosen me to his wife.  They each were learning more about me and I was learning about them. I took the time to listen and hear about their childhood and what was currently happening in their life.

The third lesson I learned was to be aware of the transition and be mindful of it.  Although, it might seem I was the only one who transitioned they all had some adjustments to get used to as well.  My daughter gained two brothers and a sister.  She also gained more independence as she learned to rely on who I raised her to be on her own.

As each child has transitions into being an adult we as parents need to remind them we are there to guide them. Although we may not speak to or even see each of them daily we remind them we are their parents and they can call on us when they need us.

The fourth and final lesson is letting go and allowing each of them to fly.  Our role as parents is to guide our children to be independent and encourage them.  At the end of the day, we have to believe we have done our part in raising them.  I am blessed they are all independent kids and each of them is so unique and brings so much joy to my life for who they are.

I have enjoyed this journey and am grateful for each one of them!
