Healthy and Tasty Halloween Treats {That Aren’t Tricks}

0

I am one of “those” moms… You know, the kind that makes green smoothies, doesn’t pack her kid dessert in his lunch box, makes their own granola… and sends the majority of her kid’s Halloween candy to the office with daddy.

I know, I can feel you rolling your eyes and hear your groaning. But, I’m okay with it. I’m okay with being that mom. And this post is going to be all about having healthy Halloween treats for your little monsters, and to hand out to any other little monsters that may come your way on Halloween.

1. Apples (without the candy)

Let’s be real. About 90% of kids like apples just the way they are. So there’s no need to cover them in sugar and lower their little immune systems. It’s super simple to buy a big bag of apples and hand those out to trick or treaters.

2. Popcorn

Now, this is really economical. You can do so many things with it! Simply air pop the kernels. Then, you can make it a little sweet by adding real maple syrup or honey while it’s popping. Or, you can go salty and add sea salt to it. Find some festive bags at your local dollar store and fill them up for the superheros and princesses that come to your door.

3. Dried fruit

These are nice because you can find them already packaged in individual servings, which makes this treat easy to hand out. I’ve seen dried raisins, cranberries, and even a combination of dried fruits in cute snack sized boxes. If you wanna make it more of a treat, you can find chocolate covered raisins too!

4. Jerky

I know. It sounds a little odd. But so many kids (and adults!) like jerky. You can also find these in individual packets. Most parents go through their kid’s candy (for different reasons, like safety reasons and to get the good stuff out for themselves! Surely, I’m not the only parent who searches for Almond Joys!) So even if the kid isn’t crazy about the jerky, their parent will thank you for the late night (protein filled) snack.

5. Citrus fruits

My kids go crazy for those easy to peel mandarins that are in season right now. Check out what’s on sale, find out your kid’s preferences and stock up. You can have some ready for snacking with your kids and you’ll have a healthy treat to hand out on Halloween!

6. Fruit leather

Many stores carry a type of “fruit leather” that resembles the Fruit Roll Up candy. It’s still pretty high in sugar because it’s compressed fruit, but it truly does taste like candy. So, if that’s what you’re going for, this type of treat may be the way to go for you.

I know these are some unconventional treats to offer. But the nice thing is that these are some basic healthy snacks most people enjoy. I’m not going to be handing out celery sticks on Halloween (that would seriously be a mean trick.) But I think you can truly enjoy trick or treating without having to hand out loads of candy.

I’d love to hear other ideas! What are some ways you make your treats healthy?
