Did you know February 22nd has been designated National Margarita Day?

National Margarita Day

But there’s booze in the blender
And soon it will render
That frozen concoction that helps me hang on

Jimmy Buffet “Margaritaville”

Whatever your opinion on that song, I think we can all agree – margaritas are awesome.

How did the margarita come to exist? No one is certain, but there are some theories:

Many people claim that they invented the margarita, one being a bartender from Mexico City, named Willie. He claims to have created the famed drink in 1934, and named it for his friend Marguerite Hemery. Another well-known legend is that a restaurant-owner named Carlos “Danny” Herrera developed the drink at his restaurant in Tijuana. He is believed to have invented the cocktail for a customer named Marjorie King, who was allergic to all hard alcohol except for tequila. Another story is that the Dallas socialite Margarita Sames mixed up the drink in 1948 for a house full of guests. One of her guests later added the drink to the bar menu at his hotels. – https://www.punchbowl.com/holidays/national-margarita-day

Whoever the first person was to mix tequila, triple sec and lime juice together, my hats off to you. To me, margaritas mean vacation, summer, warm breezes, ocean air and indulgence. I normally drink wine, but sometimes a margarita is the exact thing I need to unwind, unclench and unbutton.

Are you a margarita purist? Just liquors and lime juice only, with possibly some salt? Frozen or on the rocks? Do you love the different varieties of margaritas, like mango, peach and watermelon? I’m particularly fond of the Mexican bulldog, which is a frozen margarita with a cold Mexican beer dunked in it. In Corpus Christi, have you tried the Big Red Margarita from Mesquite Street Pizza and Pasta Company? Dragonfly Restaurant on the island has been known to serve a Carrot Margarita. FYI – Chuy’s Tex-Mex in Corpus is offering $1 floaters on February 22nd – that’s an extra pour of tequila or orange liquor on top. Check with your favorite watering hole for margarita specials.

So, grab your bestie, your partner, or your Bunco group and enjoy a fabulous margarita with some chips and salsa. Be sure and have a designated driver or Uber home. And tell us how you like your ‘rita in the comments below. CHEERS!
