Gingerbread Scented Play-dough Recipe

Full disclosure. I did NOT invent the idea of “play-dough themed” sensory play. I’ve seen several ideas bouncing around Pinterest for  years, but today seemed like a great day to give it a try, and I loved making this play-dough not just look like gingerbread, but I added some of my favorite spices to make it actually smell like Christmas! I am especially excited that we added orange essential oil. It added the perfect citrus scent in addition to the classic gingerbread smells.

To make your Gingerbread Play-dough you will need:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 4 tsp cream of tarter
  • 3/4 cup salt
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil
  • 6 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tsp nutmeg
  • 3 tsp cloves
  • 2 tsp ginger
  • 4-6 drops orange essential oil (based on citrus preference)
  • For a darker brown color you could use some brown food coloring paste, we just went natural. It’s up to you!

Instructions for Gingerbread Play-dough:

In a medium size pan combine all your dry ingredients. Whisk together gently. Turn pan to medium heat, and add luke warm water and melted coconut oil. Now stir with a wooden spoon continuously, until the mixture forms a ball. Once a ball forms transfer the play-dough into a gallon size ziplock bag. Allow mixture to cool just a bit before you finish kneading the dough. Once you are finished kneading assess your scent, if it needs a bit more you could knead it in at this time.

Now it’s time to play!

I found all these adorable “ornaments” at Hobby Lobby in their miniature tree aisle. We just cut off the strings and used them to decorate. I also got out a miniature rolling pin, and my kids love these miniature pie pans for all sorts of creations. Last but not least any cookie cutters you would like!
