I’ll be the first one to admit that I am a sappy mom. At least once a week, I find myself looking through old photos of my kids and crying. Why do they have to grow so fast?
Having worked with children in school and clinic environments, I am no stranger to cheap and easy crafts for kids. This ornament checks both of those boxes , and it is sure to make you bawl in 5 years (or next year… or next week).
What you’ll need:
Clear Ornaments with Removable tops- I bought a two-pack of plastic ornaments from Dollar Tree. I have two small children and dogs and they are the reasons we can’t have nice things- ahem, glass ornaments
Ribbon- My spool was also purchased at Dollar Tree
Scissors
Paper and Markers
Masking tape- optional, but will 100% make your life easier
Let’s get to crafting-
1. Here comes the magic part: have your kiddo lay on the floor or stand by a wall and place a small piece of masking to mark the top of their head and bottom of their feet.
2. Unroll your ribbon and cut to match the length. I could have tried to measure my kiddos or cut the ribbon directly from their height, but I assure you that the masking tape method will result in a lot less whining for all.
3. Pull the top off of your ornament.
4. Take the cut length of ribbon and roll it around itself. To make it thinner and easier to “stuff”, gently pinch the center and pull it out to create a cone shape.
5. Stuff ribbon in ornament.
*I also added a small, folded piece of paper with each kid’s name and the year. My daughter enjoyed coloring on hers.
6. Replace the ornament’s top and shake until the ribbon has unfolded slightly.
Voila!
I cannot wait to pull these ornaments out in years to come and cry about how big my babies have gotten. In the meantime, they are a nice, understated addition to our Christmas tree.
Happy crafting!
