FRIDAY FAVES : 5 Things Giving Me Life Right Now {Jerin}

October 2020.

Jerin's Friday Faves
What a time to be alive, am I right?

This year has been one for the history books…or a collection of them for that matter.

I joined this blog with so much excitement to share about things on my heart, things I find helpful in my role as wife, mama, and homemaker. Things I find useful or interesting, the perspective I’ve gained in my short 5 years of being married, my rocky journey into motherhood, etc.

But then…well….basically the poop hit the fan and started spraying all over the nation.

Between politics, health issues, racial reconciliation efforts, conspiracy theories, and just the everyday life struggles, it can all get a bit overwhelming.

In the midst of all this, I think some of us (myself included) have forgotten how to relate to one another on a level of common ground.

Social distancing has driven us all online for nearly one hundred percent of our social interaction, where a lot of conversations can turn volatile rather quickly. I think a lot of us have this need or tendency to share our strongest opinions for our entire friend’s list to see, even those we don’t have a deep relationship with.

This becomes problematic when we start having what would normally be a “heart to heart” type conversation with people who don’t necessarily have the equity in relationship with us that would normally be required for such intense subjects.

So now I find myself in a bit of a pickle, as I simply CANNOT do shallow conversation.

I hate it. I LOATHE it. So how can I still contribute quality, helpful content when I’m feeling burnt out on life?

A favorite quote comes to mind,

“If you want to bring happiness to the whole world, go home and love your family.”

-Mother Teresa

Let’s start with loving and serving our families.

If I can possibly help someone do that more easily, then I feel good about my contribution to this community.

So without further ado, here are some things that have genuinely been helping me cope with life this year, while loving and serving my family.

  1. The Instant Pot

I know, I know. It’s so typical and cliche for a mom blogger to hype a kitchen appliance. But listen up, folks. This thing is GOLD to me.

It’s on my shortlist of things to pack if we have to evacuate our home in an emergency. I use it almost every day.

We try to eat mostly whole, healthy foods in our home (keyword MOSTLY) and the Instant Pot helps make that more attainable and feasible on our budget!

The largest impact items for us have been cooking a whole chicken and saving the bones to make bone broth, making sprouted beans and legumes, elderberry syrup, hard-boiled eggs for meal prep, and pot roast!

If you don’t have one yet, I 100% recommend it.

2. Tula Carrier

I’ve used this for a couple of years now and I’m so glad I have it!  We love it for trips to the grocery store, walks down nature trails, and wearing a fussy baby on my back while I wash the dishes. Babies and toddlers love to be close to mama. It can sometimes seem like they plot against us to keep us from ever completing a task, but I’ve found that keeping them close usually does the trick!

3. Verity Podcast

I found this podcast a couple weeks ago and I’m loving it so far. The first episode I listened to was about God’s design in pregnancy and birth, and why many Christians have false beliefs about it. She also talks about miscarriage and fertility struggles, which I have personally experienced. I wish I’d had this when I was in the throes of grief, as well as during my successful pregnancies and preparation for delivery.

4. Instagram account @alittlelesstoxic

Shawna’s motto is “Do what you can with what you’re able, as it makes sense for you.”

I started a journey about 4 years ago towards trying to eliminate toxins from my home and life. Once I started researching, it quickly became overwhelming and I sometimes got consumed by stress over it. Which is arguably even worse for our health than the toxins themselves! Shawna’s approach to a more natural lifestyle has been so inspiring and freeing to me. Her honesty and quirky sense of humor are so refreshing, and she also happens to be the person who inspired me to get my Instant Pot!

5. Silk Dark Chocolate Peppermint Coffee Creamer

Last one….Ok so remember when I said the keyword was “MOSTLY “ when discussing my healthy habits??? Remember? I already told you. Don’t come for me in the comments. Keep your judgment to your SELF!

This simple thing in life brings me some joy in my mornings with my VERY early-rising toddlers. Someday I will learn to make it for myself, but for now, it is my best friend.

Silk Dark Chocolate Peppermint Coffee Creamer

It is delicious. It tastes like my early young adult days of Christmas time in a coffee shop, spending too much money on peppermint mochas, and it tastes great in hot or iced coffee. You’re welcome.

So there you have it, folks!

Five things that are currently helping me thrive in 2020. I hope you find this helpful, and I’d love to read what you all are finding joy and happiness in right now!

Go love your family.

  1. I LOVE my instant pot also. My top 5 would have to be 1) my Crock-Pot 2) my running shoes/running 3) baby dresses and bows (have brought me so much enjoyment I never knew I’d get out of such things) 4) baking 5) chocolate
