The Evolution of Pants (MY personal fashion journey)

Evolution of Pants

I went to run errands recently and I went to my drawer to grab a pair of black leggings. It was at that moment I realized that I have 8 of them.

YES! Eight leggings of the exact same color (different styles/designers). I actually have 16 different colored/type leggings. Most are for “workout” gear but those 8 black leggings are for everyday dress – including looking cute, yet casual.

Follow my train of thought for a second – I am trying to make a point here.

Then I reached out to a different drawer to count my jeans. I have 8 pairs of jeans in different colors/styles.

I’m about to sound like a really old person right now – but what happened to the way I dress, or really, the way (some) women dress?

When I was growing up in Florida, we were taught to dress up for church, to go on an airplane, to go out of the house, etc.  But now, I do not see that as the norm for myself or for others where we live.  Do not get me wrong — when I go into work, I have makeup on and stuff.  But I can honestly say a cute bun and a leggings outfit is starting to be the norm for me.

I think it’s best to think of my fashion “evolution” through the eyes of pop culture.

If you recall, I’m in my late 40’s.  When I was in school (a child of the 80’s), we dressed up for school. Think Molly Ringwald from Breakfast Club. I had a lot of long and short skirts, button-down shirts, slacks, and Bermuda shorts (because Daisy Dukes were basically forbidden in my house). Picture day was always dress up day – one year I was dressed up in a full-on suit with a frilly bow (but I will not post that).

Then, we hit the 90’s. Some called it the grunge era. Think Kurt Cobain from Nirvana and Courtney Love from Hole. I was also wearing a lot of denim and flannel shirts. But I was also caught up in the shoulder-padded blazer with jeans and T-shirt look. Think Working Girl with Melanie Griffith.

In the late 90’s and early 2000’s, I was a professional and newly married.  I would say my fashion sense definitely went more in the casual direction  – lots of casual slip-type dresses, dress pants and don’t forget the cardigan.  I’d compare this to the tv shows Friends and Seinfeld.

I think I can basically skip a decade because of kids and an illness.

However, it is during this time that I learned to love jeans.  I never really wore jeans until college and that was just when it was cold.  I learned to love jeans as a working adult.  And now — I can’t imagine life without them.

When I was a teacher — we lived for jean Friday.  And don’t mention the “fundraiser” jean days or reward jean days.  (if you donate to this cause, you get an extra jean day, or if you win this contest you get to wear jeans for a week straight).

Now – I am a business owner and do a lot of work from home – so it is casual day every day.

Don’t get me wrong – some women still dress to the 9’s on the regular (great job ladies) – just check out their amazing Instagram pages.  They seem to be so together with makeup daily and amazingly cute outfits. While I am over here deciding if makeup is REALLY necessary for today.  LOL

But you know what – it’s 2020 and nothing right now is NORMAL.  So, for me, I will stick with my 8 pairs of black leggings, cute long t-shirts, and a bun.  And those other mommas – can continue to look gorgeous daily.  As long as you are comfortable and doing your best as a parent, partner, professional – you do YOU.  And know that you ARE beautiful – whether it’s legging, jeans, or a dress!
