Battlin’ BBQ :: A LOCAL Charity supporting LOCAL Families

What started simply as a group of friends wanting to rally around a friend whose son had just gotten a devastating diagnosis, in just one year, has evolved into non-profit charity Battlin’ BBQ: an organization aiming to help children and their families in the Coastal Bend fight childhood Cancer.

Their primary goal?  To make sure families know they are not alone and give them the support they need in every area of life.

A cancer diagnosis for a child effects the entire family and the founding members of Battlin’ BBQ aim to do all they can to ease those financial burdens for a family.

I have known the President, Brian Yoder, and Vice President, Amanda Carmichael of Battlin’ BBQ most of my life. I was so honored to have the opportunity to sit down with them and share the vision for their charity, and share their needs with our readers.

It all started with a childhood friend and father receiving a devastating diagnosis for his son Aiden Martin. He reached out to Brian to assist with a small fundraiser for the family. What happened was that the entire community rallied. In that moment, they realized they could do more and continue to support and enrich the lives of local families fighting childhood cancer. Their inaugural event took place in June 2018, complete with a BBQ cookoff, horseshoe tournament, live music, raffles, food, and vendors.

And a 100% of the proceeds went to benefit the Martin family.

As I sat with them I couldn’t help but notice the passion they have for helping these families.

No one involved with the organization or on their newly formed board is make any profit: they give 100% back to these families. Which means it takes the work of dedicated community members that are invested in making the lives of Coastal Bend families better. They could not do what they do without the support of everyone involved.

Going forward they have big dreams and visions for Battlin’ BBQ to be able to support multiple families and to help local children that are confined to the hospital have things that brighten their days.

She is happiest when she is crafting, writing, or doing anything artistic. She loves music, especially ANYTHING from the 90's, and is often seen dancing around the kitchen to Nsync while cooking dinner. She is married to Derik and has two kids, Connor and Keeley (pronounced Key-Lee). Jennifer still feels like a novice when it comes to parenting and enjoys letting other moms know they are not doing life alone. She also admits she watches copious amounts of Netflix, but balances that out by reading to and with her kiddos as much as possible each day.
