The first Wednesday in October is Random Acts of Poetry Day! When I say the names:

  • Maya Angelou
  • Emily Dickinson
  • Robert Frost
  • William Shakespeare
  • William Wordsworth

Fire and Ice poem by Robert Frost

You most likely can envision some of the world’s most famous poems. You may even wonder how these poets were able to write the way they did. Well anyone can be a poet.

I have been writing poetry since I was young. Anyone can write a poem about anything and everything. Poetry today is not just about romance and love (even though those are some of my favorite types) they can be so much more. There are so many types:

  • Sonnets
  • Ballads
  • Free Verse
  • Haiku
  • Blank Verse

And many more.

For Random Acts of Poetry Day people can just bust out poems anywhere, anytime!

  • Write a poem on the sidewalk with chalk.
  • Post your favorite poem to social media.
  • Record a video reciting a poem.
  • Buy a book of poems.
  • Inspire/Encourage/ Teach someone how to write poetry.

Couple reading a book.

If you want to try it with your kiddos even better. You can turn it into a fun day of poetry. You can give them fun prompts to write about. Be totally random and fun. I’ll go first … (a Haiku about my dog).

Rocky is my dog

He runs fast chasing all cats

Eats nonstop always begging

A Haiku is a Japanese form of poetry, it has three unrhymed lines, and each line has a set number of syllables. Line one has 5 syllables, line two has 7 syllables and line three has 5 syllables again. Of course, there are much easier poem types to learn and once you get the hang of it, they will be a lot fun.

Reach your inner creative soul! Look up some descriptive words to use and tell yourself … “Self I’m writing a poem today!”

Write a poem and share it with me. I’d love to read it!
