Using Those Wheels: Bike Trails of South Texas

Chances are pretty good that one of your kids has some new wheels… a bike, a scooter, rollerblades.  In a city of sunny days and beautiful weather and bike trails to explore, there’s no excuse not to get out there with your child and make the most of them. bike-trails-corpus-christi-moms-blog

So where should you hit the pavement to give those wheels a spin?

If it’s your first adventure beyond the sidewalk in your neighborhood, you’re probably going to want to try a family friendly paved trail like the Holly Hike and Bike Trail or the Schanen Hike and Bike Trail. Both are easy paths and free from traffic.  Recently, The Bend, our local Coastal Bend magazine, offered an entire feature on the top 10 trails around the Coastal Bend.  Their #1 trail recommendation?  The hike and bike trail out at Texas A & M University – Corpus Christi.  It’s scenic, paved and free from traffic.

Once you’ve got the hang of rolling on wheels as a family, broaden your sense of adventure and take the Bayfront trail (which was listed as one of the best coastal bike trails in Coastal Living.)  Start down at the South Texas Institute for the Arts and make your way along the Seawall.  This is definitely an urban trail with the traffic moving along your side, but it’s a fun way to play tourist for a day.  They also have a new bike rental system in case your kid got a bike, but you didn’t (yep, your excuse to not bike ride is officially gone.)

If you’re ready to explore a little further, head to Portland and enjoy the scenic hike and bike route along Sunset Lake Park TrailIngleside has a few beautiful parks that are bike accessible including N.O. Simmons Park and Live Oak Park.  Port Aransas Nature Preserve boasts a beautiful hike and bike trail, as well.

For the real adventurist, take your bikes and head out to Mustang Island State Park for some beach riding or to Oso Creek Park Mountain Bike Trail for some off-road biking.

After you’ve been exploring on wheels for a bit, head back over here and share your adventure with me.  Who knows?  Maybe you’ll find a hidden trail somewhere just waiting to be explored.  I’ll be waiting to hear all about it!
