A storm is brewing in the Gulf so we’re watching and waiting. As a native Corpus Christian, I get an adrenaline rush at the start of hurricane season. At the same time, I know that disaster could strike and the danger is real. Especially as a mom, I want to be ready.
The first year we had my son, my husband and I stocked up June 1, at the start of hurricane season. We bought tons of supplies and filled multiple large storage bins, just in case. This year, we weren’t so organized, but now that a storm is gathering in the Gulf, we’re taking the opportunity to plan ahead and get ready, before a storm hits.
My husband and I are both fortunate not yet to have experienced a hurricane. Of course, we know about the destruction caused by the Hurricane of 1919. Our family members remember and retell stories of Hurricane Celia. But when I was growing up, I only had memories of lights going out and my mom filling up bathtubs with water before a storm. Hurricanes would go north of us, south of us, or change course entirely. We’ve had a lot of close calls. But the reality is, a storm can hit.
Here’s what you can do when a storm enters the Gulf.
Keep an Eye on the Storm
It sounds simple but it’s early still. Watch and wait to see what will happen. Thankfully, we have several days to determine whether it’s appropriate to shelter in place or evacuate. Storms can strengthen or change course quickly. Remain vigilant.
Gather Hurricane Supplies
There are plenty of lists online that detail supplies to have in the event of a hurricane. Water is a big one, as people flock to the stores and clear the shelves. More will come in, but don’t wait until the last minute. Our family is rounding up the following now to be sure supplies are on hand in the event of a hurricane.
- Plenty of water (1 gallon per person for a minimum of 3 days)
- Nonperishable food
- Fruit (Apples, bananas, oranges, etc. won’t ripen too quickly.)
- Toddler Friendly Snacks (Black olives, Cereal, etc.)
- Canned Foods (Chicken, tuna, etc.)
- Toddler Entertainment (Coloring books, books, games, etc.)
- Flashlights and batteries (Candles and lighters can also work. Just be careful.)
- Paper Goods
- Paper towels
- Toilet paper
- Paper plates, cups, and napkins
- Hygiene products, diapers, and wipes
- Cleaning Supplies
- Hand sanitizer
- Clorox disinfecting wipes
- Medications
- Pet food and supplies
- Emergency contact information
- Chargers and backup generators
Fill Up the Cars with Gas
Because we don’t really know what a storm will do once it’s in the Gulf, it’s smart to fill up your car with gas. If your family chooses to evacuate, you need to do so early and with a full tank. Even if you stay in town, you don’t want to be stuck without a way to get around.
Secure the House
If a storm does head this way, you’ll want to board up your house to prevent windows from breaking. Another good idea is cleaning up debris and outdoor furniture, toys, etc. that could fly and cause damage during a storm.
Utilize Local Emergency Planning Resources
Still not feeling prepared? There are tons of great resources available to help. Here are a few:
