Happy National Library Week! {April 9-15, 2017}

National Library Week CCMBThis year, April 9-15th is National Library Week.  As a homeschool family, the library has come to be an invaluable resource.  Depending on the year and curriculum in play, we’ll determine just how much time we spend at the library.

It is very comforting to know that our local library is there, ready to assist us when the need arises.

Our family appreciates the librarians who dedicate themselves to serving their community and sharing their love of books.  Because let’s face it.  If you work at a library, you probably are a lover of books.  I’ve never met a librarian who didn’t go out of their way to help.  I can’t tell you how many times I went online to my library’s website, reserved books to put on hold, and was then able to pick them up within a few days… they did all the work for me.

Imagine my excitement to learn that there is a national week, established in 1958 actually, to observe and honor our libraries and librarians.  The ALA, or American Library Association, has a website completely describing the ins and outs of National Library Week.  For example, this year’s theme is “Libraries Transform,” and those interested may acquire a Libraries Transform ToolKit for materials and tips in using the libraries transform campaign.  This year’s honorary chair is Julie Foudy, retired professional soccer player.

What is celebrated during National Library Week?

  • Monday the 10th releases the Top Ten Frequently Challenged Books from 2016.
  • Tuesday the 11th is actually National Library Workers Day where we can recognize all our library workers.
  • Wednesday the 12th celebrates all the bookmobiles and their great service to their communities.

Additional information and materials are available to:

  • Show off your librarians online and via social media avenues.
  • Participate in a video challenge.  This is FOR librarians to share instances where they were able to assist a library patron in a positive way and make a difference in their life.
  • Materials are also available to showcase your library in your community.

I think it’s befitting to celebrate and honor this amazing community resource.  Does your family use the library?

Additional information available at American Library Association and ALA Libraries Transform.
