Corpus Christi

Hi, y’all. Most people call me Jackie, but I answer to both. I was born and raised in Corpus Christi and graduated from Incarnate Word Academy High School in 2000.  I earned my Bachelor of Arts in English from TAMUCC, and I would love to pursue my master’s degree, but we’ll see what God has in store for me. I am an Instructional Consultant at Del Mar College, where I help students strengthen their writing skills, and I am also a contributing writer for The Bend and Inspire Coastal Bend Magazines. I love backyard BBQ’s and board game night with my family. I’m an introvert, so when I have some alone time, you’ll most likely find me at a bookstore, library, or brainstorming on one of my many journals as I listen to the relaxing sound of the waves crashing against the seawall. I love Corpus Christi and I am super excited for all the changes happening in the community.

Motherhood has been quite the journey for me. In August of 2002, at the age of 20, I gave birth to my son, Josef. I was nervous and scared, mostly because I was so young, but also because I had no clue what to do. The minute the doctor placed him in my arms, the mother’s instinct I heard so much about kicked in. I knew I had a best friend for life.  Four years later, oddly enough, also in August, my daughter Isabella was born. Isabella had a really bad case of GERD her first year, which called for a lot of sleepless nights. That along with postpartum depression was difficult, but somehow, I pulled through. She depended on me, but she was also my rock and her sweet smile made every difficult night much easier to handle.

I am married to my soulmate, Marco, who is also my high school sweetheart. We broke up shortly after high school, and lost touch for 12 years. During that time, I was married to the father of my children, but life happened, and we divorced. Sometime after, thanks to good ol’ social media, Marco found me and reached out. We decided to give our relationship a second chance, and here we are. We married in November of 2014 and I’ve never been happier. He is the most amazing husband to me, and stepfather to my kids.

In 2015, Marco and I were expecting our first child together, but I miscarried 10 weeks into the pregnancy. It was a difficult time, but maybe someday our rainbow baby will come. For now, I’ve got my hands full with two teenagers – one of whom is going to college next year – and another who will begin high school next year.  Every bump in the road with them has made me a better and stronger mother, and I have enjoyed every step of the way.

I grew up speaking only Spanish, and as I began learning the intricacies of the English language, I found myself deeply engaged in encyclopedias, dictionaries, and thesauruses. From this point on, I knew I loved reading and writing. During high school, my writing consisted mostly of Dear Diary type complaints and poetry, but as I grew older, I began writing short stories and songs. Now, along with the work I do for The Bend and Inspire Coastal Bend Magazines, I also do some freelance work, and I hope to write a novel someday! I love what I do, and I am excited to be a contributor for the Corpus Christi Moms Blog with an amazing group of mom
