Fun Ways to Stay Cool in South Texas

20+ Ways to Stay Cool in South Texas- Corpus Christi Moms Blog

I got in my car this morning, and the temperature read 94 degrees! Ugh! When our two types of weather are “Hot” and “Hotter,” we have to find ways to keep cool. Don’t worry, though, you don’t have to move up north to beat this summer heat.

There are plenty of ways to stay cool in this scorching South Texas heat.

I’ve said it before, my kids love to be outside. So, if everyone is drinking plenty of water, wearing sunblock, and finding shaded areas to play, there is no reason you can’t go out and enjoy some fresh air.

Get Out and Get Wet!

  1. Organize a friendly, neighborhood water balloon war. (Tip: Add some water to an ice chest. Fill the cooler with filled water balloons. Ammunition all set!)
  2. Have a water gun fight. (Don’t have water guns? Use water spray bottles, or pull out the hose and spray away.)
  3. Put out a water table or a small tub of water. Add bath toys and toy boats and let the kids at it! (Tip: Reuse water bottles and plastic food containers for your water table. Poke holes in the bottom of the containers, and watch the magic happen!)
  4. Make sponge water bombs. “Passion for Savings” has an easy and quick tutorial for making your own sponge bombs.
  5. Try out the H.E.B Splash Park at the Texas State Aquarium. It’s open daily (weather permitting) from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and is included with admission price to the aquarium.
  6. Go swimming and enjoy some water slides at the Aransas Pass Aquatic Center or the Portland Aquatic Center.

  7. Visit one of Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation Pools for more swimming fun!
  8. Cool down at a water park like Hurricane Alley or Schlitterbahn-Corpus Christi.
  9. Get wet at one of our local beaches. I love Staci’s idea of using an old baby bathtub for easy beach trips.
  10. Let the kids run through the sprinklers. It’s an old favorite at our house.
  11. Set up a backyard pool for the littles, or go old-school with a “slip and slide.”
  12. Go boating, water skiing, jet skiing, or just take a cool dip at Lake Corpus Christi State Park.

  13. Let the kids help you hand wash the car. (Note: This will be more about the kids having fun than actually getting the car cleaned.)
  14. Freeze toys like plastic animals, legos, trinkets, etc. in cups of water. Loosen the ice from the cup with a little warm water, and give the frozen toys to the kids. (They can melt them on the ground, in their hands, or using toy hammers.)

If you’re trying to stay out of the sun, there are ways to have fun inside, too. (This is especially important during the sun’s peak hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.)

Stay In and Stay Cool

  1. Take advantage of an inside children’s playground like at La Palmera Mall.
