In our first Financial Friday installment, 5 Reasons Young Families Need Life Insurance, I shared my personal story on how I learned this the hard way.

In our next installment, I shared more about my experience and The importance of needing a will

Then, we moved into some very specific content geared towards women. Two weeks ago we shared 5 Things a Woman Should Know About Investing and it was SO. GOOD.

Today we are going to chat a little bit about how to weather tough times…2020 was a doozy and 2021 is just as much of a roller coaster. Check out these 5 tips on weathering tough times.

Health. Family. Finances.

Concern about just one of these topics is a heavy lift. Disruption of all three, in the midst of an unexpected event, can be downright debilitating.

Weathering Hard Times | New York Life | Coastal Bend Mom CollectiveWhether you’re the family breadwinner, homeschooler in-chief, or simply the person everyone else looks to for emotional support, here are 5 tips to help you manage.

  1. Uncertainty. We have all been forced to think about our health, mortality, legacy, and other sensitive topics, perhaps for the first time  ever. Many are undoubtedly wondering, “What should I have done  differently to prepare for this crisis and whatever lies ahead?”

Prudent planning will help boost your confidence about the future.  Make this a period of reflection. Acknowledge what troubles you. Then, contact your financial professional to help ensure that your:

  • Income is protected.
  • Loved ones will always be cared for.
  • Investments are hedged against market volatility.
  • Long-term medical expenses will be covered if you become  seriously ill.
  1. Physical distancing. Life has moved indoors for a lot of us. But it is still important to maintain our routines and connect with the people,  places, and things we enjoy.

Music lessons, fitness classes, foreign language instruction and just about anything else you can think of is offered online at different price points. Select a few extracurriculars to supplement your children’s distance-learning and to keep them engaged in activities they love. Invite their friends to enroll, as well. Similarly, if you are used to exercising with colleagues before work, or lunching with girlfriends regularly, find a way to continue those rituals virtually.

  1. Homeschooling. Children and adolescents thrive on the consistency of eating, sleeping, schooling, and blowing off steam at the same time every day. Tweaking and reviewing their weekly schedule on Sundays will likely give your children direction and a greater sense of autonomy, all week long. It will also allow you to schedule work-related calls when you know that your children will be “attending” scheduled distance learning sessions.
  1. Stress. We can’t help our loved ones manage their emotional ups and downs if we don’t manage our own. Adequate nighttime sleep, good nutrition, and plenty of water are a start. Incorporating one or more of these stress busters into your daily routine should help, as well:
  • Thirty minutes of rigorous physical activity
  • Five minutes of mindfulness and/or meditation
  • Reading, singing, crafting, and other pleasurable activities
  • Stretches, deep breathing, and other relaxation techniques
  1. Job insecurity. If economic uncertainty have you uneasy about your personal finances and cash flow, check in with your New York Life financial professional. Whole life insurance policyholders may be eligible to withdraw a portion of any cash value* that has accrued in their policies.

New York Life has weathered global pandemics, the Great Depression, two world wars, and the Great Recession. Helping clients plan to protect the people and institutions they love, even during the unexpected, is business as usual for its financial professionals.
