The city of Corpus Christi has tons and tons of restaurants on every other street. For those of us in the outskirts, the last thing we want to do is drive “alllll the way into Corpus”. It’s literally about 15-20 minutes from Calallen but you would think we were being sent to Timbuktu. For me, in all reality, the last thing I want to do when I want a quick dinner is to drive 20 minutes or more to get there. If I’m doing that, I figure I might as well exert the effort and just cook.

When we first arrived here less than 2 years ago, needless to say, I cooked a lot. There are restaurants out this way but very few chain type (except fast food which we try to avoid if we can) which forces you to go out of your comfort zone and try out the small, family owned places. So far, we have been pleasantly surprised. As we venture out and try new restaurants, I’ll continue to share my reviews.

{Note: This is my personal opinion – this is not a sponsored post and I did not get anything in return for my honest review.}

The first review in this series is Fermin’s Mexican Restaurant & Bar in Robstown. Let me start by saying that I received no compensation for this review and went into the restaurant with my family and no employee was advised of my intent to review.

I had heard that Fermin’s Mexican Restaurant had recently moved to this new location at 900 US HWY 77 in Robstown. We knew that it had moved but didn’t know the current location. When we attempted to google and find it, it was unclear as to which was the current location and which was the old one. Thankfully I have friends who had been there so I got the correct information and we headed out.

I had never been to the original location but walking into this location, it was clear that it is brand new. It is super clean and wide open. When we walked in, it was empty but it may have been timing because right before we left, several people came in. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a lovely waitress. I believe her name is Lulu. She immediately took our drink order and brought us chips and salsa. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the chips were a mix of corn and flour tortilla chips. They were delicious.

I started my meal with a frozen Blue Hawaiian. The waitress advised me that their drinks are made with wine and not liquor, which was fine with me. I had never had a drink made this way but I really did enjoy it. For our meals, my son and I went with one of the specials, mini tacos. The plate contained 4 beef fajita (there were other meat choices but the waitress told us that beef fajita was the favorite) tacos with grilled onions, roasted jalapeño pepper and a bowl of the most delicious charro beans! My husband ordered The Miguel which is a platter containing an enchilada, carne guisada and rice and beans. He loved his meal as well and we all gave it a thumbs up!

We left full and took some home. Our waitress was very kind and attentive. Our bill was about $30 including my cocktail which is not bad at all for the quality and quantity of food and service. We will definitely be returning. They have quite a few happy hour specials that I can’t wait to check out.

Christine, a native New Yorker, moved to Calallen in 2017 after her husband Chris retired from the Army. When Chris whisked her away from Virginia Beach 12 years ago, he promised he would take her back to the beach when he retired “in just a few years”. After more than 10 years, he finally decided to call it quits. They chose Corpus for the beach, beautiful sunshine and almost year round beautiful weather. They have a 19 year old daughter named Taylor who graduated from Calallen High School and played on the Varsity Soccer Team and an 8 year old son, named CJ who is headed for the 3rd grade at East Elementary and is a Green Belt in Tae Kwon Do.
