We Love Corpus Christi Libraries!

One of my favorite things to do with my kids in Corpus Christi is to visit the local libraries. Our community has a fantastic network of local libraries. There are six libraries in total spread throughout the city and all of them offer some great services. Not only can you access a wonderful variety of literature for children and adults, but you can also utilize the library’s free wifi and large selection of eBooks, eMagazines, CDs, and Blu-Rays. The programs are the reason we visit at least once a week.

We are frequent visitors to the toddler story time at the Janet F. Harte library. During the summer, this is the “Big League Boppers” program. During the school year, it is “Music in Motion.” My kids get to sing songs, play with percussion instruments, dance, and listen to a story. If this is not enough, they get make a craft after the story.

As a mom I love this program for so many reasons. Not only are my kids exposed to music and fun parachute play, but they are read to by someone other than me. They also love making crafts.

I am a scientist by nature. There is not a single crafty bone in my body. My 4 year old mocks my lack of artistic ability and my daughter takes great delight in laughing at anything crafty I attempt to do with her. Think every Pinterest craft fail you have seen. That’s my relationship with crafts. So if I get the opportunity to take my children out the house, expose them to music, literature, and craft, you can bet I will be there!

Dr Clotilde Garcia Public Library- Southside Corpus Christi- Corpus Christi Moms BlogMy kids truly love the library. After the program we walk around and choose some books that become our reading material for the week. Exposing preschoolers to literature is an integral part of their development . Unfortunately, the way our society is now, kids get less and less exposure to books, even in schools. Everything is moving towards digital books. I never thought I would be a purist, but sometimes it is just nice to hold and read a book. Unless of course you are a parent of a small child, that’s when digital books come in helpful.

If your children are younger than preschoolers, the library still has programs for your children. There are programs for 0-12 month old babies, 12 month-18 month olds, and 18month – 3 years. Every library has different programs at all times throughout the week. All involve some kind of story and play time usually followed by a craft or playtime. There are also programs for older kids. There are after school clubs that are S.T.E.M. (science, technology, engineering, math) focused. There are also movie afternoons with free popcorn throughout the summer.

The next time you are looking for a way to entertain your children that does not involve being outside in 110 degree heat, please give your local library some consideration. It is free to join and can open up a world of literary experiences for you are your little.
