Fall Board Books

Fall board books are a wonderful way to introduce and talk about the seasons with your baby or toddler. The following books are currently on our shelves and are 100 percent approved by my one year old. They range from general autumn activities to more Halloween-specific fun. Hope you can find one or two to add to your own shelves this season.

Our Favorite Fall Board Books

Touch and Feel Fall board book

Touch and Feel Fall

By Scholastic

Touch and Feel Fall was my daughter’s first-ever fall board books when she was a baby. She loved it then, and she still loves it now. This simple book features real photos of items often associated with fall such as a pumpkin, acorn, sweater, school bus, geese flying south, and more. Each photo also has a touch-and-feel component that babies and toddlers love.

The Busy Little Squirrel fall board book

The Busy Little Squirrel

By Nancy Tafuri

This classic fall board book contains beautiful illustrations and a simple story that keeps a toddler’s attention. Many animals in the woods and on the farm invite our industrious squirrel to relax and have fun with them, but he is too busy collecting a variety of food for the winter. Finally, we find our busy squirrel resting in a tree with a large, prepared stash of food. Now he can relax with no worries during the long winter.

Autumn fall board book

Autumn

By Gerda Muller

We absolutely love Gerda Muller’s seasonal books, and Autumn is by far our favorite. This book is filled with gorgeous illustrations that depict various nostalgic and wholesome fall activities such as playing in leaves, collecting nuts, flying kites, and making jam. Since this book contains no text, toddlers can get lost in the illustrations, and it’s a great way to gently introduce seasonal vocabulary and ideas.

Autumn in the Forest fall board book

Autumn in the Forest

By Rusty Finch, Illustrated by Katya Longhi

This fun lift-the-flap book is heavy with text, but you and your toddler can easily point out different fall animals and objects found in Katya Longhi’s luscious illustrations. The story follows a chipmunk as he collects food while also teaching kiddos about the autumn forest and other plants and animals. This particular book is currently my daughter’s go-to read.

Fresh Fall Leaves

Fresh Fall Leaves

By Betsy Franco, Illustrated by Shari Halpern

Okay, this is kind of a cheat. It’s not a board book, but this paperback is so much fun, I had to include it on the list. It simply depicts two children having fun with a pile of leaves. I love giving my daughter a pile of real or fake fall leaves to copy the simple actions in the book. It’s a fantastic way to introduce literacy, sensory, and gross motor skills.

Apples and Pumpkins fall board book

Apples and Pumpkins

By Anne Rockwell, Illustrated by Lizzy Rockwell

This is a wonderful classic story about a family who visits a farm to pick apples and pumpkins. We then follow them home to see the different things they do with each. It’s a great transitional book between early fall and Halloween, as we see them carve Jack O’ Lanterns and go trick-or-treating at the end.

Halloween Board Books

Eek! Halloween

Eek! Halloween!

By Sandra Boynton

Sandra Boynton never fails to make my toddler laugh out loud. She is a beloved author in our home, and Eek! Halloween does not disappoint! Follow some silly, scared chickens as they see a Jack O’ Lantern and “spooky” Halloween costumes. “What’s going on here?” They finally realize they’re being silly because it’s Halloween!

Little Blue Truck's Halloween

Little Blue Truck’s Halloween

By Alice Schertle, Illustrated by Jill McElmurry

We are collecting ALL of the Little Blue Truck books. My daughter always wants to read them over and over again. While the original Little Blue Truck book is a great read for the fall (the illustrations depict colored and falling leaves), Little Blue Truck’s Halloween is more holiday-specific, and the rhymes and illustrations always capture our little one’s attention.

The Very Busy Spider

The Very Busy Spider

By Eric Carle

The Very Busy Spider is not specifically a Halloween or fall board book, but since spiders are often associated with Halloween, it’s a great way to fit in one of our favorite children’s authors, the prolific Eric Carle. The storyline is similar to that of The Busy Squirrel in that various animals ask the spider to join them in different activities, but she can’t because she’s busy spinning her web. At the end, she falls fast asleep after a busy day.

If you’re looking for a board book that gently introduces Halloween with simple text and warm illustrations, this may be the perfect fit! There’s always something nostalgic about Tomie dePaola’s books, and his My First Halloween stands the test of time.
