I have yet to meet a Unicorn Parent. A parent so perfect and magical, they shine like rainbows and shower down glitter wherever they go. These parents effortlessly float from soccer practice to gymnastics to dinner without having to deal with a random toddler temper tantrum or a lost shoe. They get seven hours of sleep a night, their kids are always on time to school, and every school project is Pinterest worthy.
While on the outside we TRY to be the Unicorn Parents society tells us to be, on the inside we feel like Donkey Parents. And that’s totally OK.
Donkeys are trustworthy, they have a high sense of self-preservation, and they won’t do anything that makes them feel unsafe. They are strong, have a great memory, and can carry a whole lot of baggage.
Personally, I feel like I just described myself. Donkeys are the moms of the animal world. You have to keep everyone safe, remember the smallest details, and carry EVERYTHING. Donkey Parents make mistakes but we learn from those mistakes and it makes us stronger.
So here are some confessions from a few local Donkey Parents. Just so you know, if you aren’t a Unicorn Parent either… you are not alone.
